Key Terms in Scrum Projects
Scrum development is the most popular agile project management. In this article we will discuss some key terms used in Scrum.
1. Sprint
A Sprint is one timeboxed iteration of a continuous development cycle. Within a Sprint, a planned amount of work has to be completed by the team and made ready for review.
2. User Stories
A user story describes the type of user, what they want, and why. A user story helps create a simplified description of a requirement from an end-user perspective.
3. Epic
An Epic can be defined as a big chunk of work that has one common objective — it could be a feature, customer request, or business requirement.
4. Product Backlog
A product backlog is a list of new features, changes to existing features, bug fixes, and infrastructure changes that a team may deliver in order to achieve a specific outcome.
5. Burndown Chart
A burndown chart is a graphical representation of work left to do versus time — the outstanding work (or backlog) is often on the vertical axis, with time along the horizontal.

6. Chicken
A “chicken” is not on the project directly, but they consult on the project and are informed about it.
7. Pig
“Pigs” are totally committed to the project and are responsible for its outcome — opposite to chickens, they are actively involved in the project.
8. Retrospective
An Agile retrospective is a meeting held at the end of an iteration. The team reflects on what happened during the iteration and identifies actions for improvement going forward.
9. Spike
A spike is a story that cannot be estimated until a development team runs a time-boxed investigation. The output of a spike is an estimate for the original story.
